# Conference at the UIB: Esteban Mate quantifies the impact of absenteeism in up to 2,000 euros per leave

04/06/2026

General

Last Friday, the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) held the technical conference "Absenteeism from work: the necessary reform of its regulatory framework." Organized together with the Economic and Social Council of the Balearic Islands (CES), the forum had the outstanding intervention of Esteban Mate de Miguel, deputy general director of Management of Fraternidad-Muprespa, who has put figures on the economic impact that this phenomenon has on the business fabric.

During his participation in an expert round table, Mate has outlined the real cost of absences for organizations in Spain. According to their data, each sick leave represents an average cost of around 1,100 euros for a company that does not have voluntary improvements in complements, rising to 2,000 euros in those corporations that do have these additional complements. Given this scenario, the manager has defended the convenience of promoting initiatives that reduce the incidence of avoidable cases and shorten the duration of those processes that have already been resolved from a medical perspective.

Regulatory analysis and the role of the company

The morning session featured a keynote presentation by Francisco Pérez de los Cobos, former president of the Constitutional Court and professor at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), who analyzed absenteeism and its current legal regulation.

Next, the doctor Maria del Mar Crespí, permanent professor of Labor Law at the UIB and State Award for the best doctoral thesis on workplace absenteeism, gave a conference focused on the corporate room for maneuver, detailing in detail what the company can and cannot do in the event of the absence of its workers.

A top-level regulatory debate

In the afternoon, the debate continued in a round table moderated by Dr.Erik Monreal, vice dean of the Faculty of Law, where Esteban Mate shared space with the UCM professor Jesus Lahera, as well as with union representatives from UGT and CCOO, and employers' associations such as CAEB and PIMEM.

In this space, the necessary regulatory change in the sector was addressed, the work being carried out by an OECD team to issue recommendations to the Government of Spain and the direct impact that absenteeism is causing on the competitiveness of the Balearic Community.

The closing of the day was carried out by Catalina Teresa Cabrer González, Minister of Labour, Public Function and Social Dialogue of the Government of the Balearic Islands, who urged social agents, companies and institutions to continue working in a coordinated manner to find effective solutions to this structural problem.
