# Fifth SafetyTalks webinar: counseling is consolidated as a tool for workplace safety

Communication has become a decisive tool to transform the preventive culture in organizations. This is how he defended it Rafael Delgado, prevention consultant for Fraternidad-Muprespa during the fifth webinar organized by Prevencionar within this cycle, in which thecounselingas a model capable of generating real changes in the behavior of workers.

Delgado opened the session with a reflection that many prevention technicians recognize:“ How is it possible that people who know the safety rules, who know all the protocols, continue to commit unsafe acts??"From this question, he invited us to rethink the traditional approach and analyze the role of the communicator.



 

He also explained that thecounseling, developed by Carl Rogers In the middle of the 20th century, he proposed a humanistic model where the person discovers for themselves what happens to them and how they can improve. This perspective, transferred to the workplace, allows the worker to generate his or her own conclusions and commit to more solid solutions.

During the session, he pointed out two common errors in prevention: confusing knowing with doing and thinking that more information guarantees more safety. “Just because we give the person more information does not mean that there will be more security.", he warned. He also stressed the importance of psychological safety: "toBefore starting to speak we are already activating something in our interlocutor. If that's not psychological safety, forget it”.

Delgado delved into the three pillars that, according to Rogers, allow a conversation to transform behaviors: acceptance, empathy and congruence. “Accepting does not mean approving or justifying”he explained.

Regarding empathy, he clarified that it does not consist of feeling the same as the other, but rather making them feel understood. And regarding congruence, it was clear: “sIf what I think, feel and express does not match, the other person catches it"Trust, he added, is the natural result of applying these principles and he defines it as "the lubricant of any interpersonal relationship”.

The webinar concluded with an invitation to action: “We have two options: continue transmitting orders waiting for them to be fulfilled or try to change ourselves to generate change in others.". A call to evolve towards more conscious, human and effective communication in the prevention of occupational risks.
