He European Resuscitation Council (ERC) is a non-profit interdisciplinary scientific organization, founded in 1989 and made up of a network of National Resuscitation Councils whose fundamental mission is to preserve human life by making high-quality resuscitation (CPR) available to everyone. The fundamental objective of the ERC is to promote all measures that help increase survival after out-of-hospital or in-hospital cardiac arrest.

The ERC recognizes that the best method to increase survival rates for PCEH is to increase the percentage of bystander CPR. "The more people are trained and the more Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) are strategically installed, more than 50% of deaths from cardiac arrest could be prevented."

Other European scientific organizations have joined this campaign and the dissemination of this day, such as the European Society of Cardiology, the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, the European Emergency Society, the European Society of Anesthesia and the Red Cross.

The low percentage of bystander CPR indicates that the biggest problem is the public's lack of knowledge about cardiac arrest. Their education both at home and at work, in nursery schools, and the inclusion of CPR as an essential part of training is the way to reduce the percentage of deaths from PCEH.

The message from the ERC is clear, "We can save up to 100,000 lives every year in Europe", and campaigns like today's are a first step to achieve this.
