# World Breast Cancer Day: prevention, support and return to work to protect health and employment

19/10/2026

General

Every October 19, World Breast Cancer Day is commemorated, a date that seeks to raise awareness about the importance of early detection, access to treatments and comprehensive support for affected people. It is the most common tumor among women, both in Spain and worldwide, a reality that also has an important work dimension.

In Spain, between 36,000 and 38,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year, making it the most common tumor among women. The Spanish Association Against Cancer recalls that the risk of suffering from this disease throughout life is around one in eight women.

Breast cancer has a significant impact on the professional environment. The National Institute of Safety and Health at Work (INSST) highlights that it is the cancer with the highest incidence among women of working age and underlines the need to facilitate safe, progressive return to work processes adapted to the circumstances of each person.

Diagnostic and therapeutic advances have significantly improved survival. In fact, the INSST points out that breast cancer survival exceeds 90% in countries with higher income levels, which allows many workers to return to work after treatment. However, side effects such as fatigue, pain, functional limitations or emotional impact can make this process difficult, making coordinated support between health professionals, companies and prevention services necessary.

In this context, prevention takes on a fundamental role. Specialists agree that early detection significantly improves the prognosis of the disease. Likewise, maintaining healthy lifestyle habits helps reduce the risk of developing different types of cancer. Recommended measures include regular physical exercise, control of body weight, a balanced diet, reduction of alcohol consumption and elimination of tobacco.

On World Breast Cancer Day, prevention, early detection and support during the recovery process and return to work are consolidated as essential tools to improve the quality of life of affected people and move towards a culture of care.
