Provisional data on Work Accidents in Spain in 2024
According to the provisional data recently published by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy , between January and December 2024, 628,300 work-related accidents with sick leave were recorded, which represents an increase of 0.5% compared to 2023.
Within this increase, accidents during work hours barely grew by 0.1%, while accidents while commuting increased by 3.1%. Regarding the type of employment, accidents resulting in sick leave increased by 0.9% among salaried people, while among the self-employed there was a significant decrease of -5.2%.
If the incidence rates are analyzed, which measure the number of accidents per 100,000 workers, a 2.3% reduction in accidents during the day is observed, a trend that extends to almost all sectors. The extractive industries stand out especially, with a drop of 8%, and the health and social services activities, with a reduction of 5.6%.
However, the fatal accident rate follows an opposite trend since the provisional data includes 796 deaths at work, which represents an increase of 10.4% compared to 2023. As for deaths during work hours, they increased by 11.2%, while those in itinere grew by 7.1%. As in accidents with sick leave, mortality among self-employed workers decreased by -10.8%, but in the case of employees there was an alarming increase of 12.8%.
