European Mobility Week is a European initiative aimed at raising awareness, both among policy makers and citizens, about the negative consequences that irrational car use in the city has for public health, as well as the environment, and the benefits of using more sustainable modes of transport such as public transport, cycling and walking.

This initiative, created in 1999 and supported since 2000 by the European Commission, is celebrated every year from September 16 to 22 by carrying out, among others, activities aimed at promoting sustainable mobility and encouraging the development of good practices and permanent measures. In addition, on September 22, the Car-Free Day was celebrated, a day that gave rise to this initiative and whose mission is to find new solutions to the problems associated with the increase in traffic in cities.

The General Directorate of Mobility Strategies of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility is, since 2025, responsible for the promotion, promotion, coordination and documentation of this initiative in our country, in its capacity as National Coordinator of the European Mobility Week. Specifically, the Spanish coordination aims to promote the participation of the city councils of our country, the main actors in this awareness campaign, but also of companies, universities, NGOs, civil society entities and institutions of various kinds such as foundations, public transport authorities, councils or councils.

In addition, each year the European Commission announces the European Mobility Week Awards, currently in two different categories, to reward those city councils and organizations that have worked to promote sustainable urban mobility in their respective areas.
