Last Thursday we published the first part of the report carried out based on the testimonies of four traumatologists from the Southern Territorial Directorate. Today we invite you to continue learning about his work, his concerns and his daily life.

“Teamwork” is a concept that none of them stop repeating in the conversation. From the youngest and with the least seniority at Mutua, Dr. Corena, to the most experienced. Working as a team is not a choice. It is simply what it has to be.

An isolated trauma, or an isolated physio, is not useful for much", explains Corena. "We all go hand in hand because we are multidisciplinary teams. I greatly value the preparation of the clinical history that is done in”, explains this doctor born in Colombia who arrived in Spain in 2011 to train as an MIR.

Dr. Morales expresses himself in a similar way, and is categorical when stating that “Without equipment I couldn't work. The team is everything. And because I am a doctor, I do not believe in being at the top of the pyramid: whoever performs instruments is important, the radiologist is important, whoever works with implants and whoever receives the patient on admission is important..

Everyone is important. And at Fraternidad-Muprespa the teams are wonderful

Corena trained as a sports surgeon and now, like his colleagues, he sees cruciate ligament injuries, muscle tears, tendon injuries, meniscus injuries... that is, injuries that are not so different from those of someone with a sports profile. “What does vary is the will and effort for recovery and general physical fitness.”, he adds.

New technologies are an important and unstoppable tool at the service of traumatology at Mutua, which creates a culture of innovation through them and launches large transversal health projects, such as 'Recupera', for the transformation of rehabilitation.

Dr. Mares, who serves as Provincial Medical Director of Seville, analyzes the use of artificial intelligence in radiological diagnosis, in relation to the pilot plan that was implemented in his center, in Seville, as well as in Valencia, and values it as something "great, which can help with diagnoses, especially for less experienced doctors”he explains.

The objective of this plan was to study, analyze and decide the usefulness of the traumatological innovation proposals, susceptible to adaptation in the Mutua for an improvement in the management and treatment of patients.

Dr. García Parra abounds in this same diagnosis about the importance of technological advances and their use of them in the Mutua. In his opinion “Artificial intelligence is going to be as basic a tool in a few years as the Internet is."In addition, the use of biological treatments for bone edema stands out as important advances, in this case medical advances."We are not just dedicated to operating, we also advance with a broad portfolio of anti-inflammatories”.

For his part, Dr. Morales highlights the systems that traumatology benefits from through technology in many other fields, such as the manufacture of custom-made implants in complex cases, adapted to the patient's anatomy, the development of preoperative planning based on CT with custom-made prosthetic guides, digital footprint monitoring systems, orthoses and splints printed in 3D and based on the patient's anatomy, etc...

It is when talking about the patients and the entire universe that surrounds the work accident that the four accumulate experiences and opinions.

I feel that the working population sometimes protects itself little. I have been linked to Fraternidad-Muprespa since 1995 and, although techniques or materials advance, the injuries remain similar and many of them are due to recklessness. For example, now we see many accidents and very tremendous, very serious things, with electric scooters.”, says Dr. Mares, and whose testimony is endorsed by Dr. Morales.

People protect themselves little, there is more and more prevention, but there are many avoidable traumas, I suppose due to overconfidence, because 'for two minutes nothing is going to happen to me'

These two “well-matched work couples” as they describe themselves, are very aware of why Fraternidad-Muprespa is 'The Mutual Fund that takes care of you'. “The most important patient for me, the one I never forget” explains Dr. Mares, “He is the one I have operated on many times, or I still see in consultation, because he leads an active life and works but is not at 100%. He is a patient whom I know by his first name and two surnames, and if he passes in front of the center, he comes in to say hello. That's why we are 'the Mutual Fund that takes care of you'”.

There are two patients that Dr. Morales does not forget. "One with a femur fracture from traffic who came to me after having undergone surgery many times, having suffered multiple complications and who came to my office crying because he had been walking with crutches for years and whom we helped by putting a nail, something that was definitive. Now he congratulates me on Christmas every year. And a lady who came with an infection in an ankle, vascular lesions, osteomyelitis... from whom we removed about seven centimeters of tibia, that is, we did a bone transplant, to regenerate your bone. In this way we avoid amputation.”.

Dr. García Parra, in addition to personifying patient care, feels that he is the recipient of the care offered by the entity. “For me this is 'the Mutual that takes care of you' because we have posters in the centers that say 'Zero tolerance for attacks' and I am very grateful and appreciate that the Mutual protects the rights of health professionals”.

I have been working here for a short time", explains Dr. Corena, "I think that Fraternidad-Muprespa has very exhaustive doctor selection processes. This rigor on the part of whoever chooses has to do with the quality of care sought for the patient. That's why I believe that, thanks to these very conscientious processes to search for new talents, this is the Mutual Fund that takes care of you.”.
