Respirable crystalline silica: know the risk to protect health

Crystalline silica is a natural component found in rocks, sand, clay and numerous construction materials such as brick or mortar. The real health risk arises during processes such as cutting, drilling, sanding or demolition. By vigorously machining these materials, an extremely fine powder known as respirable crystalline silica. These particles are so tiny that they are not visible to the naked eye and, when inhaled, they penetrate deeply into the lungs, potentially causing silicosis and other serious pathologies of occupational origin.

Prevention in companies must always prioritize collective control systems. This includes the implementation of wet work methods (supply of water to prevent dust from being suspended in the air) and the installation of localized extraction systems directly on the cutting or sanding tools.
