The Fraternidad-Muprespa Hospital has performed, for the first time in the world, a shoulder surgery with a augmentation technique with long portion biceps autograft for cuff surgery rotator.

The Dr. Álvaro Minuesa, head of the Traumatology and Orthopedic Surgery Service together with the team from the Shoulder Unit, have carried out this intervention, applying an augmentation with an autograft. A technique that is intended to reinforce the suture of the supraspinatus tendon in a patient with a tendon with poor biological behavior that has difficulty healing, to reinforce it and make it more solid and resistant, as explained in this video technique.

In this way, a graft of the person's own has been obtained, specifically the long portion of the biceps has been used, which, being very close to the tendon that we are suturing, avoids performing another surgery. Dr. Minuesa explains to us that "in addition, the classic way to treat this type of pathology was to resort to cellular human dermis grafts, but the high cost of this procedure, which sometimes produces immunological responses, as they are grafts from another person, made it advisable to look for alternatives such as the one described."

Although the biceps tendon has been used more times to do augmentations, in this specific way it is the first time it has been done in the world.

The novelty of this technique lies in the fact that “we change the shape of the tendon with a press that has been designed in Germany for this purpose, so that from a cylindrical structure such as a tendon, we obtain a flat structure, which is what we are going to use to put on top of that tendon,” Dr. tells us. Minuesa in the following video highlighting that we are pioneers in this technique.

As for its use by professionals, although it is a complex technique, it does not require extensive training or greater skill and as it is one of the most recurrent pathologies in the type of Mutua patients, the development of this procedure is very interesting, as Álvaro explains in this video, for the advantages over other techniques.

In relation to the patient, it emphasizes that the tissue is completely biocompatible unlike allografts.

As it is a graft from the same person, an autograft, complications due to response are reduced immunological.

In addition, it can be applied without the need for another intervention, which means that the surgery is not excessively dilated and, most importantly, allows the repair of the tendon to be effective and permanent, as Dr. Minuesa describes in the following video, which are the benefits for the patient.

Fraternidad-Muprespa works on innovation and development of new techniques, with the aim of recovering the health of our patients in the most satisfactory way and with the best quality, because that is our mission and that is why we are #LaMutuaQueCuidaDeTi

You can see the interview with Dr. Minuesa in which he explains all the development that the Fraternidad-Muprespa Havana Hospital has carried out regarding this technique, in the following video.
