September 17, World Patient Safety Day: an inalienable right

Since 2019, World Patient Safety Day has been celebrated. It was the 72nd World Health Assembly that adopted resolution “Global action for patient safety” with the objective of faithfully complying with a fundamental principle of medicine.

The overall objectives of World Patient Safety Day are to improve global understanding of the concept of ‘patient safety’, increase public commitment to healthcare safety, and promote global action to prevent and reduce avoidable harm in healthcare.

Fraternidad-Muprespa, aligned with these important objectives, focuses during this day on the actions it develops in order to provide the greatest security to the processes with its patients, both in its hospital, the Fraternidad-Muprespa Habana Hospital, and in its network of healthcare centers.

In the first, the hospital, which opened its doors two and a half years ago, the security offered in all processes to the patient, and which also entails a high degree of security for the professional, has been the leit motiv during the design and construction of the center, as well as in the provision of its facilities and equipment, and in the definition of protocols and action guides.

Security protocols apply to three aspects: health, physical and technological. 

With respect to healthcare, several areas of special protection are contemplated: radiological safety, safety in surgical protocols, safety in auxiliary means and sterilization and finally, safety in sanitary procedures.

Finally, with respect to the physical area, security protocols are specified in the building protection measures and physical security at accesses, through electronic surveillance technologies.

The technological aspects are those that require greater clarity in all the processes it covers, especially in relation to access to applications and databases, given that they manage sensitive personal information; and security in the perimeter network and in the building's connections with the outside world through the Internet.

Security is technical means and technology, but above all, it is people, educated and aware professionals, committed to providing total security to other people. It is also a process of continuous improvement, subject to constant review of the risk analysis.
