The United Nations General Assembly has chosen the year 2019 as the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements in tribute to the 150th anniversary of its first publication by the Russian scientist Dmitri Mendeleev. Throughout the year, various associations and scientific and educational institutions have planned a series of activities to celebrate this date.

Related to this anniversary and coinciding with International Women's Day which is celebrated on March 8, we want to highlight the work of the chemical engineer Teresa Valdés-Solís who published in Last November, the article “ The Periodic Table of Women Scientists on the Naukas platform, in which it proposed a special periodic table made up of names of female scientists. The author highlighted that among the many periodic tables that exist on such varied topics, no one had yet dedicated one to women and that is why she organized them into different disciplines, classifying their names with the symbols of the table and some curious examples of this are:

  • H: Hydrogen: Hypatia of Alexandria: mathematician and astronomer.

  • Ni: Nickel: Ángela Nieto, biologist and neuroscientist, Jaime I Research Award.

  • Faith: Iron: Antonia Ferrín Moreiras, astronomer.

  • Sn: Tin: Françoise Barré-Yesnoussi, virologist and Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine.

The INSST has also joined this tribute to the periodic table that organizes the elements according to atomic number, electron configuration and their chemical properties. Of the 118 elements of the periodic table, 35 have an environmental limit value and 8 have a biological limit value.

At Fraternidad-Muprespa we believe that investing in knowledge always produces the best benefits, which is why we offer you our online proposal on the prevention of accidents and occupational diseases, with free access for our associated companies called “Prevention Classroom”. In it we have e-learning courses and audiovisual workshops for all sectors and related to our news we suggest the course “Risks in the chemical industry”.
