Workplace road safety, pending issue?
Traffic accidents constitute one of the social and economic challenges of our time. Despite the efforts made from multiple areas, we continue to present high rates of occupational accidents associated with road safety. In recent times, the change in mobility with the Covid-19 pandemic and the implementation of electronic commerce have conditioned the probability of suffering a traffic accident.
In the workplace, traffic accidents both on mission and in itinere, going to or returning from work, also cause casualties and deaths every year. Frequently, workers have to travel for the purpose of our work, either because it is part of our task (the case of a courier or delivery person), because it is necessary to carry out our functions (sales, management, technical) and the vast majority to go or return to our workplace.
During these trips, accidents can occur, so it is necessary to take measures to protect the health of the workers, and by default of the rest of the people with whom we share the road, whether they are pedestrians, cyclists, electric scooter drivers, bus drivers, motorcycle drivers, van drivers, taxi drivers, or truck drivers.
What are the consequences of road accidents?
The consequences are very important from an economic point of view. At the company level, a series of direct costs are produced, such as vehicle repair and loss of productivity, and also indirect costs such as those associated with the loss of commercial image, alteration of the work environment, or absenteeism itself.

But there is another part that is even more important and more difficult to quantify that has to do with the people involved in the traffic accident. When we face a traffic accident, let's not only think about the deceased as the main victims, let's also reflect on the emotional, economic and social burden that it entails for the injured person and family.
