The data on road accidents in the urban area from the previous year were presented last week by the General Directorate of Traffic and although the records for the 2024 financial year are still provisional, they do serve to put on the table the main challenges in terms of urban road safety and reinforce collaboration between administrations to continue reducing road accidents.

Last year 66,545 road accidents were recorded in urban areas, with a balance of 488 people dead and 5,043 who required hospital admission, some data that reflects a decrease in fatalities of 6% compared to 2023 (30 fewer deaths) and a 3% increase in serious injuries (+123).

The accident rate in 2024 in the urban environment continues to reflect a reality that remains over time and that is that the majority of road accidents in our country occur within the urban environment, although their lethality is comparatively lower. According to the data presented, 65% of all road accidents in Spain occur in cities. However, and despite this high concentration of incidents, urban roads only account for 27% of the total number of deaths and, on the other hand, represent more than half of the serious injuries (53%).

The distribution of fatalities in cities during 2024 once again puts the focus on vulnerable users, who represented 79% of the total deaths on urban roads. Within this group, pedestrians were the most affected, with 206 deaths representing 42% of the total, followed by 139 motorcyclists (28%), 26 cyclists (5%) and 13 users of personal mobility vehicles (3%). In contrast, only 16% of the deceased (79 in total) were traveling in passenger cars, which shows the lack of protection for those who travel without a body in increasingly complex and shared urban environments.

These data confirm a structural trend and that is that the most sustainable or active modes of transport are also the most exposed, which requires specific protection policies and urban design focused on the safety of the most vulnerable.
