The General Directorate of Traffic has launched its traditional summer awareness campaign focused this year 2023 on alcohol and the consequences that people who cause a fatal traffic accident live with.

Under the motto: “When you kill someone on the road, you kill them every day of your life”, the campaign shows us how risky behavior can make your life no longer yours and the underlying feeling of guilt that follows you every day after the traffic accident.

The three chosen characters, Cristina, Martín and David, maintain years later, a brief dialogue with the person who was killed on the road (Lolo, Juan and Carlos) and in which the emotional anguish, guilt, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress of having killed a person in a traffic accident are shown.

The reason that led them to focus the summer campaign on alcohol and its incompatibility with driving is because in the last year the number of drivers with the presence of alcohol in their bodies in fatal traffic accidents has increased by 4 points. In 2019, the percentage was 25% and in 2022 it rose to 29%. When the road accidents took place at night and on the weekend, the percentage of drivers involved in fatal accidents with the presence of this drug increased by 7 percentage points compared to those registered in 2019.

The campaign can be seen and heard until next September 7 on television, radio, printed media, digital media, social networks, cinemas.

road triangle

This summer also brings a novelty on the road and that is that since July 1, the use of danger pre-signaling triangles on highways and highways is exempt in the event of immobilization of the vehicle due to an accident or breakdown. Its use remains mandatory when these circumstances occur on conventional roads.

The DGT has published an instruction in which this exception is included, which is motivated mainly by the high number of people killed on high-capacity roads (highways and expressways) in recent years and because the data on accidents on this type of roads in which an accident has occurred and in which there was an immobilized vehicle show that traveling on the shoulder, remaining on it, trying to repair a breakdown or even the placement and subsequent removal of the danger warning triangles significantly increase the risk of being run over.
