The European Parliament has just published a Resolution on mental health in the world of work, expressing concern about the disconnect between current mental health policy and workplace attitudes that do not adequately take into account the fact that protecting the employee is a key asset and ensuring that people affected by mental health problems have an appropriate return to work working.

Workplaces are requested to facilitate access to mental health support services and external services, as well as prevention, early recognition and treatment of workers who may be affected, and to support their reintegration and help prevent relapses, as well as the implementation of business mental health prevention plans, including suicide prevention.

The resolution emphasizes that harassment and discrimination occurs in the workplace for multiple reasons and that these frequently constitute a source of stress and recalls that, in particular, discrimination based on age, disability, sex, gender, sexual orientation, race, educational or socioeconomic level and membership in vulnerable groups is widespread and must be addressed by employers.

Highlights the importance of including an anti-harassment policy in health and safety measures in the digital world of work and of providing support to businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), to help them implement anti-harassment and bullying policies by highlighting the importance of mental health awareness to address the stigmatization, misperceptions and social exclusion often associated with health problems mental.

It also considers that current measures to improve the mental health and safety of workers are insufficient, especially with regard to the assessment and management of psychosocial risks, and calls on the European Commission to create mechanisms for the prevention of anxiety, depression, burnout and for the return to the workplace of those suffering from psychosocial problems.
