The European Business Survey on New and Emerging Risks(ESENER)_ the EU-OSHA is a comprehensive study of how health and safety risks are managed in European workplaces. The work aims to help better understand how European workplaces approach safety and what measures they take to promote employee well-being. The results have become a very valuable resource for national and European policy makers.

The initial findings of the third European survey of companies indicate that the factors frequently cited by companies as those considered to be a risk to the health of workers in Europe are the need to deal with difficult people, repetitive movements of the arm and hand and the need to move heavy objects.

The 2019 data is based on interviews conducted in more than 45,000 companies of all sizes and sectors in 33 European countries. Additional questions included in the 2019 survey shed new light on emerging occupational health and safety risks such as the impact of digitalization and the importance of sitting for long periods of time. as the third most common risk factor reported by companies.

A comparison with the 2014 ESENER-2 results identifies trends at national and EU level, not only in terms of risk factors, but also in terms of health and safety management and associated incentives and obstacles. Worker participation in the management of psychosocial risks has decreased in a number of countries despite the recognition of the importance of a participatory approach in addressing these increasingly prevalent risks.

On the other hand, the proportion of entities that carry out risk assessments has increased. A full range of publications and a new tool to visualize data derived from the survey results will be available from 2020.
