Improvements in working conditions in the fishing sector
The Official State Gazette has recently published theRoyal Decree 618/2020 of June 30, which establishes improvements in working conditions in the fishing sector.
This standard aims to improve working conditions in this sector through provisions on recruitment, working time, repatriation, food, accommodation and health protection and medical care for fishermen.
The text sets out the conditions relating to health protection and medical care on board a fishing vessel, indicating that they will have the right to receive medical treatment on land and to be disembarked as soon as possible in the event of serious injuries or illnesses. He will also receive health protection and medical care from the owner of the fishing vessel, which will be provided free of charge to the fisherman, while he is on board, or when he has disembarked in a port outside the country responsible for his social security protection.
The standard also guarantees the application of the minimum health and safety provisions regarding the organization of working time provided for in Royal Decree 1561/1995 of September 21, on special work days regarding work in fishing. Likewise, it is guaranteed that self-employed workers under 18 years of age do not carry out night work or carry out activities on board fishing vessels in respect of which Law 31/1995 of November 8, on the Prevention of Occupational Risks, imposes limitations for employed workers.
