Let's avoid tomorrow's workplace cancer today
Tomorrow, February 4, World Cancer Day is celebrated, it is therefore a good time to remember the importance of measures to combat cancer in the workplace since it is considered the main cause of occupational mortality in the European Union and represents more deaths of people under 65 years of age in the EU than any other disease. In fact, it is estimated that carcinogens are the cause of around 100,000 deaths each year.
The National Institute of Safety and Health at Work (INSST) has launched the campaign titled "Let's avoid tomorrow's occupational cancer today" from January 24 to February 14, with the objective of to raise awareness about the importance of preventing occupational cancer and sending the message that exposure to carcinogenic substances today can be the cause of cancer in the future.
This campaign is aimed at employers, workers and prevention technicians to inform about the most frequent carcinogens or mutagens and the health risks they represent, as well as to promote their identification in the workplace as a prior step to their replacement, reduction or control.
The EU strategic framework on safety and health at work for the period 2021-27 indicates that 52% of work-related deaths in Europe are caused by cancer and therefore this figure marks the need to develop action against occupational cancer that integrates different areas of knowledge such as epidemiological and clinical. Likewise the replacement of carcinogenic agents with other non-hazardous or less dangerous ones and the adoption of other preventive measures that help control exposure and allow their safe use are key actions to avoid consequences on the health of workers and reduce the incidence of occupational cancer.
