National Plan preventive actions for the effects of excess temperatures on health
The Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs has published, as every year, the document Plan of preventive actions for the effects of excess temperatures on health. The objective of this Plan is to reduce the impact on the health of the population as a consequence of excess temperature.
Exposure to high ambient temperatures can cause an insufficient response of the human thermoregulatory system. Excessive heat can alter our vital functions if the human body is not able to compensate for variations in body temperature.
From a biological approach, exposure to excessive temperatures can cause health problems such as cramps, dehydration, heat stroke, heat stroke (with multi-organ problems that can include symptoms such as unsteadiness in gait, seizures and even coma).
The impact of exposure to excessive heat is influenced by physiological aging and underlying diseases.
From a social point of view, marginalization, isolation, dependency, disability, and the living conditions of people with fewer resources, add risk factors that make these groups even more vulnerable.
The Risk factors associated with exposure to high temperatures that are considered in this National Plan are of personal, environmental, occupational or social and local nature.
