The INSHT has published “The effect on health of psychosocial risks at work, an overview.” This report focuses on stress and health effects caused by exposure to psychosocial risks.

The International Labor Organization (ILO) has defined psychosocial risks as the interactions between the content, management and organization of work and other environmental and organizational conditions, on the one hand, and the skills and needs of workers.

This work provides detailed evidence on the impact that psychosocial risks have on a range of health outcomes. Motivated by the lack of data, it may not be possible to extrapolate the effect on health of psychosocial risks globally, but cross-sectional studies have been carried out and the data obtained support the evidence available in developed countries. Furthermore, the nature of psychosocial risks (which are many and different, affecting health either through work-related stress or through their interaction with physical hazards in the work environment) makes it difficult to extrapolate in detail for each health effect, but the data presented in this document show that in some cases, such as coronary heart disease and musculoskeletal disorders, such extrapolation is possible.
