Prevention in ventilation and air conditioning systems
The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge has published a guide titled Recommendations on the use and maintenance of air conditioning and ventilation systems in buildings and premises commercial aimed at sector. The document establishes a series of technical criteria to protect public health, with the aim of preventing the spread of COVID-19 in public spaces and premises with mechanical ventilation or air conditioning, such as offices, shopping centers, sports or cultural facilities.
The guide emphasizes that air renewal is the most important parameter, indicating that, if possible, a minimum of 12.5 liters per second (l/s) per occupant is recommended, which is the value that the Regulation for Thermal Installations in Buildings attributes to good quality air. To ensure this minimum value, you can work in two directions, such as increasing ventilation or reducing space occupancy.
Other important considerations in the document indicate that it is advisable to verify that the equipment responsible for air renewal works, at least, in its nominal design conditions and that possible pressure losses, especially internal to the system, are minimal (filters with clogging, etc.). If the system has specific air quality controls (CO2 probes, etc.), it is recommended to disconnect them, giving priority to the system flow, and during working hours, it is advisable to work with the maximum flow allowed by the system from two hours before opening and until two hours after closing. During the remaining hours of the week, including weekends, it is preferable that the system continue operating at low flow, but never at a level lower than 25% of the nominal air flow.
This week the document titled Recommendations for the operation and maintenance of air conditioning and ventilation systems in buildings and premises for the prevention of the spread of SARS-Cov2 has also been presented, which aims to provide technical recommendations to air conditioning professionals so that the operation of these facilities helps in the prevention of the spread and contagion of SARS-CoV-2 in buildings and premises for all uses, except for special areas of hospital environments.
For its part, the National Institute for Safety and Health at Work (INSST) has presented the infographic titled Recommendations on the use of air conditioning installations in buildings to in order to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2 with recommendations on centralized, natural ventilation, temperature and humidity or ventilation in bathrooms.
