Within the European Week for Safety and Health at Work, we are presenting you with good practices on a daily basis to avoid musculoskeletal disorders and thus contribute to the campaign whose title is:

Healthy Jobs,

Let's relax the loads

belonging to the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, EU-OSHA.

Today we come to tell you about good practices to avoid MSDs in the health sector, a practice that you can find in full in our guide of good practices to avoid MSDs, in addition to many other practices that you will find in all our good practices guides that we have developed in collaboration with Prevencontrol:

Good practices in the healthcare sector:

There are many different lists of classifications of activities according to risks, here we put one of them, the one given by Garg Owen in the Journal of Occupational Medicine (32(10), 1009-1013), which identified the 12 tasks with the highest risk when treating the patient (from highest risk to lowest) are:

  1. Patient transfer from bathroom to chair.
  2. Patient transfer from chair to bathroom.
  3. Patient transfer from chair to bed.
  4. Patient transfer from bed to chair.
  5. Patient transfer from bathtub to chair.
  6. Patient transfer from chairlift to chair.
  7. Hold the patient.
  8. Move it towards the head of the bed.
  9. Reposition him on the bed (e.g., side to side).
  10. Relocate him in the chair.
  11. Change diapers.
  12. Make the bed with patient.
  13. Undress the patient.
  14. Tie supports.
  15. Feed the patient.
  16. Make the bed without patient.

We can carry out several measures or good practices to avoid MSDs in these situations, such as:

  • Use of elevating beds to avoid overexertion.
  • Use of lifting means to move and move patients.
  • Bathroom cranes.
  • Patient transfer sheets.
  • Adaptable stretchers.
  • And visually:

To conclude, reader, since you have been sitting for a while, we propose a microexercise, this way we demonstrate that movement is demonstrated by walking:

neck and head exercises

At Fraternidad-Muprespa we hope that these guides are of interest to our mutual members, meet their expectations by predominating practical cases and help to strengthen the necessary preventive knowledge, as well as the implementation of preventive measures that can be effectively transferred to the workplace, thus guaranteeing the safety, health and well-being of the employees. workers.
