Agricultural machinery constitutes a means of production that has become essential in agricultural activity, in many cases the profitability of farms even depending on the proper use of mechanical equipment. In an agriculture that respects safety and the environment, it is necessary to use machines that in their design and manufacturing have taken into account a series of minimum requirements, without forgetting a series of devices that minimize the risk of accidents for their users and therefore help prevent workplace accidents.

The latest regulations on this matter are included in the Royal Decree 448/2020, of March 10, on the characterization and registration of agricultural machinery. It is a text applicable to all agricultural and forestry tractors, motocultors, tractor-trailers, automotive agricultural machinery, carriers, towed agricultural machinery and agricultural trailers, as defined in the General Vehicle Regulations, approved by Royal Decree 2822/1998 of December 23, as well as to machines suspended machines attachable to tractor vehicles and forklifts for applying phytosanitary products with a capacity of more than 100 liters.

Article 6 includes the safety conditions and details that to minimize the risks, both for its users and for road traffic, all machinery included in the scope of application of this standard must meet minimum safety requirements detailing the national and community regulations that apply to all this type of machinery such as tractors, motor cultivators, tractor-trailers and others. agricultural machinery.

The article 7 details the safety structures in the event of a rollover remembering that tractors are required to be equipped with an officially approved frame or cabin to reduce damage to the driver in the event of a rollover, depending on the criteria and requirements included in the EU Regulation 167/2013 and the standards to follow to equip these protection structures.

It must be remembered that the National Institute for Safety and Health at Work (INSST) has the SEMA Safety of agricultural machinery questionnaire application on its website.  An application that allows you to check whether agricultural machines meet design and manufacturing requirements intended to guarantee the protection of the safety and health of the operator during their intended use.
