The Structural Code for construction materials is approved

The Official State Gazette published last week the Royal Decree 470/2021 of June 29,, which approves the Structural Code for construction materials.

This code is the regulatory framework that establishes the requirements that concrete, steel and mixed concrete-steel structures must meet to satisfy the requirements of structural safety and safety in the event of fire, in addition to the protection of the environment and the efficient use of natural resources, providing procedures that allow compliance to be demonstrated with sufficient technical guarantees.

The requirements must be met both in the design and in the construction of the structures, as well as in their maintenance and criteria are also given for the management of existing structures during their useful life. 

This regulation assumes that the design, construction, control and maintenance of the structures that constitute its scope of application are carried out by technicians and operators with the necessary knowledge and sufficient experience. Furthermore, it is assumed that said structures will be intended for the use for which they were designed and will be adequately maintained by the property during their service life.

The first additional provision includes everything related to the aspects of occupational risk prevention that must be taken into account in the content of the project, in the execution of the structures and structural elements of concrete, steel or mixed concrete and steel, and in the maintenance work of the structure and its demolition or deconstruction.

It is established that the provisions of the specific health and safety regulations on the matter will be followed and, in particular, the provisions of Royal Decree 1627/1997 of October 24, which establishes minimum health and safety provisions in construction works, within the framework of the provisions of the Law. 31/1995 of November 8, on Occupational Risk Prevention.
