Update of the official catalog of traffic signs
The Council of Ministers has recently approved a reform of the General Traffic Regulations that updates the road signaling system, in force since 2003, with new traffic signs and updating of many others with the aim of improving road safety and efficiency in traffic management.
The main changes are as follows:
- The new standard adapts signage to social, technological and mobility changes, with a unified catalog that improves understanding and coherence throughout the territory.
- New signs are incorporated to regulate new modes of transport, such as personal mobility vehicles, and respond to current traffic situations.
- Pictograms are redesigned, visibility is improved and obsolete signs are eliminated, with special attention to sustainability and inclusive visual language.
The Royal Decree of reform has come into force on July 1, 2025, but the physical change of the signs will be carried out progressively and in coordination with the usual renewal cycles to reduce administrative burdens and optimize the use of public resources. Likewise, signs that have been suppressed must be removed for reasons of legal certainty within a period of one year from the entry into force of the regulations.
The new content will not be immediately incorporated into the theoretical tests to obtain driving permits and licenses. After the entry into force of the standard, a minimum period of three months is opened before its inclusion in the exams with the aim of allowing the training manuals to be updated and guaranteeing that applicants have the necessary time to prepare adequately.
