The INSST has just updated the Technical Guide for the evaluation and prevention of risks related to exposure to carcinogenic or mutagenic agents at work.

The new version provides criteria, recommendations and technical information for the evaluation and prevention of risks derived from exposure to carcinogenic or mutagenic agents during work, in order to facilitate companies and those responsible for prevention in the interpretation and application of Royal Decree 665/1997, the reference regulations on this matter in our country.

In the period of time that has elapsed since the appearance of the previous edition of the guide, several modifications to the aforementioned royal decree have been published, which has meant, among other changes, the updating of Annex I, which includes new entries such as work that involves exposure to respirable crystalline silica dust generated in a work process, work that involves cutaneous exposure to mineral oils previously used in internal combustion engines to lubricate and cool the moving elements of the engine, and work that involves exposure to diesel engine emissions. Likewise, Annex III on occupational exposure limit values has been updated with new substances included in it.

The main novelty included in this edition is the incorporation of two new appendices for determining the presence of carcinogens or mutagens in workplaces not directly involved with their use or generation and for information on workers exposed to carcinogens or mutagens in the workplace.

These appendices are intended to correctly identify workers exposed to these substances which, together with adequate health surveillance, are essential to guarantee the safety and health of workers and avoid occupational cancer.
