The National Institute for Safety and Health at Work (INSST) has published the document titled Instructions on waste management in the health crisis situation caused by Covid-19.

Effective management of waste in contact with SARS-CoV-2 must include all the processes involved such as identification, separation, collection, storage, transportation, treatment and disposal.

This document contains instructions on the management of domestic waste and waste from hospitals, ambulances, health centers, laboratories and similar establishments, without prejudice to the provisions of Law 22/2011 of July 28, on waste and contaminated soils. The fundamental objective is to guarantee the protection of the health of workers against exposure to the virus during activities that involve the handling of waste in contact with it.

Services regarding the collection, management and treatment of hazardous waste, as well as urban solid waste, both hazardous and non-hazardous, are considered essential activities in the annex to Royal Decree-Law 10/2020 of March 29. Likewise, the Order SND/271/2020 of March 19, established instructions on waste management in the health crisis situation caused by COVID-19.
