Women in the Agricultural Sector
On March 8, International Women's Day is celebrated, which is a good occasion to dedicate a day to remembering that we must continue working on the elimination of sexist stereotypes and overcome___the challenges that affect the lives of working women.
In our field of occupational risk prevention, there are still differences that affect the risks faced by men and women and con These differences are often not recognized in work practice. Therefore un gender-sensitive approach to occupational health and safety implies recognizing and taking into account the differences between male and female workers.
This year we dedicate this news space on our portal Previene to women who work in the agricultural sector and for this we remember a triptych recently edited by the INSST that is titled: "Women in the agricultural sector, expanding the field of vision".
According to data from the EPA, it is estimated that the percentage of working women in the agricultural sector as a whole is 23% compared to 77% of men and the differences are even more accentuated by activities within the sector. Despite these percentages, the role of women in the countryside is very important, although on many occasions their work is made invisible because it is considered “family help.” A segregation of tasks is also observed since women are largely dedicated to manual, non-mechanized work and, in general, perform less qualified tasks.
In terms of injuries derived from work, women in the sector have a higher incidence rate of occupational diseases, especially musculoskeletal disorders, and are a priority group for action due to their accident rate.
In this context, it is essential to guarantee equal opportunities between men and women, from the knowledge and acceptance of biological differences without converting them into social inequalities and also to improve the existing information in ORP with gender treatment.
At Fraternidad-Muprespa we work to disseminate a culture of prevention with the aim of reducing the accident rate of our mutual members. As part of our dissemination work, we encourage you to discover our web portal dedicated to the prevention of occupational risks and the development of a culture of health Previene where you can find interesting informative material with entertaining and specialized content.
