Workplace accidents decrease and fatal accidents are reduced
Madrid, January 13, 2026. The National Institute of Safety and Health at Work (INSST), a scientific-technical body specialized in occupational risk prevention dependent on the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy (MITES), highlights the decrease in fatal accidents during 2025 in all sectors of activity except Construction, consolidating a downward trend that reflects an improvement in the field of occupational safety and that also occurs in a context of a historical maximum number of workers.
According to the progress data on occupational accidents provided by the General Subdirectorate of Statistics and Socio-labor Analysis, during 2025 took place 10,476 fewer work accidents during the working day, which represents a decrease of 1.9% compared to the previous year. In total, there were 584 deaths, 62 less than in 2024, which represents a decrease of 9.6% in absolute terms. Besides , serious accidents fell by 1.7%.
The incidence rate—an indicator that relates the number of accidents to the affiliated working population and that allows a more accurate assessment of the real evolution of the accident rate—also shows positive results. The total incidence rate of accidents during the day decreased by 4.0%, while that of fatal accidents decreased by 11.6%.
On the contrary,the number of accidentsin itinereincreased by 2,562 (2.9%), which shows the need to reinforce preventive strategies when traveling to or from work. Regarding 2024, the number of deaths in itinere increased by one working person (0.7%).
Workplace accidents by sectors
The analysis by sector reveals a significant drop in the incidence rate of accidents during the day in all economic activities. In particular, sectors such as Hospitality recorded the best figures, with a decrease of 7.1%, while Administrative activities and auxiliary services(1.1% decrease) and Manufacturing industry(1.9% decrease) showed more moderate reductions.
In absolute terms, the number of fatal accidents decreased in all sectors of activity except Construction. In the sector Agrarian fell 30.4%; in the Industry 5.2%; and in Services 19.6%. In the Construction, with 29 more deaths, increased by 21.5%.
Types of fatal accidents
In relation to the way in which fatal accidents occurred during the day, an increase in blows is observed as a result of a fall of working people(3.2%). He The rest of the forms or contacts that led to deaths experienced decreases: the heart attacks, strokes and other strictly natural causes decreased by 5.6%;the drowning in a liquid, 16.7%; the crushes and amputations they decreased by 17.2%;traffic accidents they were reduced by 24%; and the collisions or blows against a moving object 52.2%.
