World Road Safety Day: protecting motorists also means preventing at work
On June 10, World Road Safety Day is celebrated, a day to remember that road accidents continue to be one of the main causes of injuries and deaths in the world. In the work environment, many of these accidents affect workers who travel by motorcycle, a group that is especially vulnerable on the road.
According to the National Institute of Safety and Health at Work (INSST), in 2023 more than 76,000 work-related traffic accidents were recorded in Spain, of which 75% occurred in itinere (during commuting to work or returning home). In this type of accidents, motorcyclists represent a high-risk group, both due to their daily exposure and the severity of the injuries suffered.
Spain is the second country in the European Union with the largest number of motorcycles and mopeds, with almost 6 million units. Although they represent 15% of the total vehicle fleet, they account for 27% of fatalities.
Improper overtaking, speeding, not wearing a helmet and the consumption of alcohol or drugs are some of the most dangerous risk factors and those that accumulate the most violations among motorcyclists. For this reason, and coinciding with this date, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has intensified surveillance on the roads most traveled by motorcycles during the weekends, especially between May and October, when leisure trips increase. In addition, it has launched an interesting campaign on the Advanced Driving Assistance Systems for Motorcycles (ARAS).
Since Fraternidad-Muprespa, as a mutual collaborator with Social Security, we actively work for support our associated companies in improving their work-related road accidents. Through our portal Previene, we offer specific materials and informative resources aimed at raising awareness and training workers about traffic risks, both during the day and on the commute. This section includes videos, infographics, good practices and tools to integrate road safety into the company's preventive management.
On this World Road Safety Day, we invite you to reflect on the way you travel and consult our content. Because road safety is also a job responsibility.
The best way to get there is to arrive safely.
