Infographic Golden Rule 5: use safe and healthy technologies
Before continuing with the series of infographics that show the most relevant aspects of the Vision Zero campaign, we want to make a point. The 7 golden rules are not stages of a process of cultural change, they all advise on the best way to reach the objective of the campaign, which is zero harm to workers. It is clear that the starting point must be the mobilization of the leadership of management members (golden rule 1) but that does not make it any less important to have a good risk assessment that describes the work being carried out and is not generic (golden rule 2). Another example, in some companies rules 1 and 2 will be included in the security management system that corresponds to rule 4. What we mean is that these rules that make up the campaign must be adapted to each company, depending on the stage of prl maturation in which they are.
Fifth Golden Rule
As we summarize in the central button of our infographic:
Safe production facilities, machines and workplaces are essential to work without injuries
To land this rule we can perform different actions:
- Formation of a multidisciplinary team made up of the personnel who usually use the machines to determine the risks and the measures that must be implemented to avoid them.
- The previous point leads us to carry out a non-general risk assessment, appropriate to the specific processes and work carried out by each company.
- Procedure: work closely with purchasing to include safety parameters in their procedures, so that before receiving material, machines or facilities, suppliers are aware of the requirements we need them to meet.
- Machines: we make use/maintenance sheets, that is, for each type of machine we make small instructions or sheets that contain the relevant safety aspects regarding the use and maintenance of the machines, here we can implement the rules that save the company, for example, use the appropriate interlocks, lotto processes, epis, etc...
- Workplaces: we look with renewed eyes at the places where we work. Ergonomics must begin to play a leading role in workplace risk assessments. We can carry out collaborative techniques to determine risks by involving workers. We implement measures to mitigate the detected risks, once implemented we review them and determine their effectiveness.
We want to highlight, in addition to all this, something truly important. We believe that a common element to all the golden rules is communication. It should be a 'must', a basic in our prevention closet. Communication, open, two-way, in different formats, so that we can carry out active listening processes. Where the person speaking feels heard and where the person listening can give true feedback, making this process the master key to improving prevention.
At Fraternidad-Muprespa we are convinced that a change in the accident rate trend is possible and to this end our Occupational Health and Safety Consultants spread throughout Spain, throughout January and February, are carrying out training actions to activate Vision Zero in our associated companies. Not only that, but throughout 2020, different days of the Vision Zero training itinerary will be taught where the aspects that we consider most relevant of this campaign will be explained. If you want more information about all the training actions planned for 2020, go to this link.
