Sterilization unit

The sterilization unit of the surgical block of the Fraternidad-Muprespa Habana Hospital is the service on which it depends that the material and instruments used in surgical interventions, or in other hospital services, arrive in perfect sterile conditions. Although it is a non-care service, because it is not in direct contact with the patient, all its work focuses on providing security to the processes that affect them.

The sterilization center is divided into several zones:

  • Reception and departure of traveling or transit material.
  • Admission of contaminated material. Washing area.
  • Classification, packaging and loading of autoclaves with computer records area.
  • Sterilizer unloading: sterile material warehouse.

The processes carried out in the sterilization service are three: cleaning, disinfection and sterilization. All materials are subjected to the three processes and all three are equally important.

To clean and disinfect the material, the sterilization service has:

  • L avadora disinfector, which eliminates organic matter automatically in a homogeneous and controllable process, avoiding differences in the amount of water, detergent, temperature and time.
  • Ultrasonic washing, which p produces high-frequency waves and is especially indicated for cleaning stainless steel instruments and whenever there are scales.

  For sterilization you have:

  •   Two steam sterilizers or autoclaves, in which the sterilizing agent is water vapor, which increases the sensitivity of the germs, causing the denaturation of their cellular components.
  • Hydrogen peroxide sterilizer with plasma phase (state between liquid and gas) for thermosensitive material.

The importance of traceability stands out in this service, which allows comprehensive control of the product throughout all phases of the sterilization process.

It is also important to highlight that the patient's electronic history contains all the surgical material and instruments with which they have been in contact.
