Yesterday, Wednesday, the National Institute of Safety and Health at Work (INSST) hosted the technical conference “Prevention of occupational risks: 30 years of history facing challenges”, an event with a significant institutional presence of people and entities linked to this field, such as Fraternidad-Muprespa, represented by a large group of specialists in the field of occupational risk prevention.

The Minister of Labor and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz, opened the day and recalled that Law 31/1995 was a turning point and incorporated “ a new culture of prevention and the responsibility of companies ”. He also highlighted that in these three decades the number of deaths in work accidents has been reduced by almost half (from around 1,500 in 1990 to 677 registered in 2024).

These figures continue to be very serious and require us to act ”, stated the vice president, who urged the interlocutors to reach a consensus at the social dialogue table on the future law on the prevention of occupational risks. “ We have many differences, but the health of working people is not one of them ,” he stated.

The new standard will respond, according to the head of Labor, to the “ challenges of the time with approaches and tools of the 21st century: artificial intelligence and algorithms at the service of the health and progress of the social majority ”, and will introduce stricter regulation on carcinogenic, biological and chemical agents, updating the Environmental Limit Values. The information and registration systems for work accidents and the list of occupational diseases will also be improved.

Intensifying the action of the Labor and Social Security Inspection is another of its objectives. And all this, with a gender perspective, which will allow us to act on feminized groups in a more precise and effective way.

In addition, the vice president announced that 2026 will be declared the Year of Safety and Health at Work.

The conference had four thematic tables that analyzed the evolution and areas for improvement of preventive regulations from different perspectives.
