Be alert, but not alarmed because of COVID-19
Given the global situation created by the COVID-19 coronavirus and after the first positive cases in Spain, we must be informed and know the relevant preventive measures without incurring alarmism. The Ministry of Health, Consumer Affairs and Social Welfare is in permanent contact with international organizations: World Health Organization and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), to assess risks and coordinate response measures.
In addition, the Ministry includes on its web portal constant updates of data of interest as well as preventive advice, frequently asked questions and denials of fake news that you can learn about by clicking on the links that we put at your disposal. Here we will summarize some of them:
- Maintaining good general hygiene is key. You must wash your hands frequently, both to avoid this virus and other more common ones, for example, the flu.
- Avoid touching your nose or mouth. If you sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with the inside of your elbow. It is also important to dispose of tissues once used.
- Monitor our symptoms. The most common are fever, cough, and feeling short of breath. In some cases there may also be digestive symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal pain.
- Take precautions if we have been in risk areas. We must lead a normal life but be aware of our state of health. If symptoms such as those described above occur, we must remain at our home or accommodation and contact 112 by telephone.
Spain has sufficient containment mechanisms, which include clinical protocols, a coordinated healthcare and public health network, and sufficient capacity for the diagnosis and treatment of cases.
