The General Council of Social Graduates of Spain held the Centenario Awards Gala on the night of Thursday, May 22, at the Intercontinental Hotel in Madrid, a commemorative event for the centenary of this profession.

The event brought together different authorities from the political and judicial sphere, such as the president of the Congress of Deputies,  Francina Armengol, the Second Vice President of the Government and Minister of Labor and Social Economy,  Yolanda Díaz, Félix Bolaños, Minister of Justice, Elma Saiz, Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, or the President of the General Council of the Judiciary, María Isabel Perelló.

Also present were the 43 presidents of Official Colleges of Social Graduates of Spain and representatives of other entities linked to this profession, such as Fraternidad-Muprespa, represented in the act by Natalia Fdez.

The gala began with the presentation of the  Centenario Awards to entities and institutions whose work has been decisive for the development and consolidation of the work of social graduates. The Ministry of Labor and Social Economy was awarded for its historical connection with the birth of the profession and its role in the evolution of labor relations in Spain.  Yolanda Díaz, who was accompanied by former ministers Magdalena Valerio  and  Juan Carlos Aparicio, received the award that she thanked for being the “recognition of an institution that I love, whose work I respect”

The Ministry of Justice received an award for its institutional support for the profession and the drive in the digitalization of judicial and administrative processes. The current holder of the portfolio, Félix Bolaños  received the award, accompanied by former minister Juan Carlos Campo. Bolaños highlighted his past as a labor lawyer “working many hours side by side with many social graduates” and claimed the role of justice, which must be a “close, agile and modern service for citizens.”

The Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration was awarded for its historic collaboration with the Social Graduates in the protection of the labor and social rights of citizens and Minister Saiz highlighted that the ministry she directs “ appears in the lives of people in the most special and most critical moments, when we start working, when our children are born, when we become widowed or retire,” and its staff has proven to be up to the task to make everything work.

Next, the Great Crosses of Social Justice were imposed on two former presidents of the General Council of Social Graduates, Ricardo Gabaldón and José Blas Fernández.

Joaquín Merchán , president of the Council, closed the event with a speech by social and legal recognition of social graduates during these hundred years of history. “ Today we are more than 17,000 registered professionals throughout Spain, specialized in labor legal advice, management of labor relations, defense before the courts of social jurisdiction and mediation in conflicts,” he assured.

He also highlighted that the profession was born at a time of great transformations in the field of work when Spain was beginning to structure a regulatory framework that defended the rights of workers and employers. “Today, after a hundred years, the world needs that social justice again,” he said.
