Round table: the COVID pandemic and its medical impact on mutual insurance companies

The pandemic caused by the SARS Cov-2 virus has shaken the entire world. In Spain, the numbers of infected people with severe symptoms have forced many health centers to be converted and adapted to accommodate the large number of patients who required hospitalization, and these professionals have told us about their first-hand experience and have shared with us their conclusions: the importance of the work carried out caring for COVID patients, as well as the need to strengthen collaboration between mutual insurance companies and take care of our health professionals.

Emilia Sánchez, general director of Planning, Research and Training of the Ministry of Health of the Community of Madrid has inaugurated the day, giving way a Mª Jesús Terradillos, director of the National School of Occupational Medicine - Carlos III Health Institute, who has presented the table and thanked doctor Antonio Ortega, head of the Internal Medicine unit del Hospital Fraternidad-Muprespa Havana, for being the promoter of the day.

For Dr. Ortega, it was necessary to share the experiences lived during the first wave of COVID by the hospitals of the Mutual Collaborators with Social Security, normally dedicated exclusively to trauma practice, and this from the perspective that what was experienced has been an event worthy of going down in history.

He also commented that at the Fraternidad-Muprespa Habana Hospital, doctors were recruited, protocols were made and the professionals who came to help were trained.And both management, pharmacy and nursing did their best to ensure that all professionals had the best working conditions, to end by highlighting that the hospital is currently free of COVID, at full capacity and with all protocols applied.

For its part, Milena Rosales, from the Care Coordination and IT Control Center of Fraternidad-Muprespa, has made a presentation on the sick leave processes and their impact during the COVID period

Next Carmen de la Peña, head of Internal Medicine service at Hospital Fremap Majadahonda, has exposed what the arrival of the first 13 patients transferred from Severo Ochoa meant, a figure that increased to 108 patients with an average age of 71.7 between 33 and 96 years. “The hospital was reconditioned, the staff was readjusted, and direct access was made to COVID patients.We had a 24-hour laboratory technician and psychiatry, psychology and social work created a work group that, with video calls and telephone, were live with the family members, in addition to helping all the professionals who were there.

Gabriel Ruiz, ___head of the Anesthesiology of the same hospital, has explained how the Post-Anesthesia Recovery Unit (PACU) had to be converted into an ICU.

HTMLTAG152For his part, Alejo Erice, head of the Internal Medicine department at Hospital Asepeyo Coslada has explained that at the end of 2019 the pandemic began to develop, and that in February they had a protocol for the treatment of these patients in an isolation area and with the appropriate use of PPE.

For his part, Javier Gutierrez, head of the Internal Medicine Section of the same hospital wanted to pay tribute to Hospital and its staff: “it was a challenge, without any preparation and it was carried out. The hospital was transformed, with 2 floors for COVID patients, it was created a discharge protocol because we only had a 35% death rate and all teamwork turns out much better.”

Representing MC Mutual, Juan Carlos Serfaty, , head of the Traumatology service la Clínica Copérnico, who has indicated that they received 53 patients with an average age of 90 years and only had a 10% mortality rate. Javier Arroyo, of the Internal Medicine service of the aforementioned has also participated clinic.
