The V Workplace Road Safety Week starts in A Coruña with “Give way to safe driving”

General

The headquarters of the Provincial management of World Day of Remembrance for Victims of Traffic Accidents, Sunday, November 20.

The poster exhibition "Pedestrian, don't cross your life" was also inaugurated on the day, provided by Stop Accidentes, and which can be seen at the Provincial address until November 18.

José Rega, head of the Center of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health of Galicia, ISSGA of A Coruña, was in charge of opening the day, highlighting the importance of preventing accidents in itinere, those that occur on the way, both when going to work and when returning after the day, since they account for more than half of accidents in work.

Victoria Gómez, Provincial Head of Traffic of Coruña, offered data on the 2030 Road Safety Strategy, which since 2009 has marked the work in favor of road safety in the last decade. Among the objectives achieved through this strategy, it stands out that between 2009 and 2019 there was a 37% reduction in deaths per million inhabitants, a 35% reduction in serious injuries in accidents and a 25% reduction in young drivers (18-24 years old) in deaths and serious injuries on weekends. On the other hand, among the objectives not achieved, the failure to achieve the 30% reduction in deaths in accidents while commuting stood out. The final figure was 21%.

On behalf of Stop Accidentes, its secretary and delegate in Galicia, Jeanne Picard, intervened, who offered testimony of the suffering caused by road accidents, both for the victims and their family environment.

Eduardo Lodeiro, Occupational Risk Prevention consultant at Fraternidad-Muprespa, presented the data handled by the Mutual in relation to occupational road accidents in the province of A Coruña relating to the period from 2019 to 2022. Lodeiro summarized that almost two out of every three accidents, 64%, are in itinere while 36% are on mission, that is, during the course of the day.

If we focus on so far in 2022, the data shows that those injured are both men and women, (50% and 50%), that 56% of those who have had an accident are between 25 and 44 years old and that the sectors of activity to which these workers with the most accidents belong are retail trade, postal activities, and warehousing and storage.

Alejandro Lamelo, provincial director of Fraternidad-Muprespa in A Coruña was responsible for closing the day by summarizing the most notable points of what was said by the attendees, and inviting the participants to practice driving with a reality team immersive virtual, which simulates the difficulties that arise for the driver when adverse situations occur.
