Fraternidad-Muprespa closes its VI SVL Week with a day on accidents due to distractions
Mar Morales, director of the Prevention and Development of Health Culture department at Fraternidad-Muprespa, opened the day, highlighting distractions as one of the main causes of road accidents, hence the need to “promote a culture of education, respect and road safety.”
As an example, he highlighted that when checking WhatsApp you lose attention for 20 seconds, when making a call, 14, and when tuning the radio, 6. "Would anyone think of getting into a car in which the driver was blindfolded? We must remember this image the next time we want to check our cell phone while behind the wheel," he summarized.
Morales gave way to the presentation of Montserrat Pérez, Deputy Deputy Director of Road Training of the DGT, who highlighted the importance of addressing the distractions that cause accidents "from a global and holistic point of view, in addition to incorporating them into training actions." He also highlighted that in recent controls on drivers, the most committed infraction was carrying the cell phone in the hand, something that happened in 33% of the cases.
The interesting discussion table began, moderated by David Revillo, Mutua's Prevention consultant, which gave way to the interventions of Mar Cogollos, General Director of AESLEME, Iñaki Lerga, Director of Sustainability of AXA Spain, and Óscar Fuertes, CEO and Founding Partner of Infova Automotion.
This conversation focused on such important aspects of driving as psychosocial risks, the aging of the population and the vehicle fleet, 'in itinere' accidents, the recommended requirements for carrying a scooter or the value of training, communication and raising awareness of drivers.
Mar Cogollos stressed that it is not enough to avoid 'external' distractions, such as smoking or picking up the cell phone, but "how do we disconnect our mind from problems?" he asked, adding that "drivers must be trained in mindfulness, necessary to internalize driving safely."
Iñaki Lerga spoke about age and driving, highlighting that there is no direct relationship between higher accident rates in older drivers. Regarding the regulation for carrying scooters, he stated that it would be necessary at least that an official permit be required to operate them, that they would be required to have insurance and that they should not be driven without a helmet.
Óscar Fuertes focused on priorities when driving. "If I think calling my boss back is more important than concentrating on driving, I'm going to continue doing it. Therefore, that's where, formatively, we have to work." “At Champions Skills for Safety,” he added, “we transfer to drivers the experience of professional drivers, who before starting, spend time concentrating.”
Natalia Fdez. “This goes beyond a simple event, it represents the consolidation of a solid alliance aimed at the common good, which is working for better road safety at work.”
“By embracing SDG 17 we are building together bridges of cooperation that transcend the limits of an entity,” he explained, then thanking everyone present “for putting aside busy agendas to contribute to a more sustainable future,” concluded.
This day marked the closing of the events organized by the mutual insurance company in its VI Work Road Safety Week, after those held in Almería and Oviedo and the Fratertalk with Carlos Sainz as guest.
