Mental lapses, irritability, cognitive deterioration, increased cortisol, distortion of how we perceive the things that others tell us, lack of concentration, poor performance... these are some of the consequences of not having quality rest for a long time.

And precisely to prevent this type of disorders, on October 24, we participated in the online conference "Quality sleep to transform your company", organized by the International Institute of Health and Healthy Habits and inaugurated by its president, Sonia Fernández-Durán.

In this meeting, Elena López, a consultant specialized in sleep, spoke about the indicators that set off alarm bells when one has a lack of quality sleep: increased heart rate, tremors, decreased reflexes... and how it can affect the workplace.

We live normalizing stress, and cortisol shoots up when we don't get enough sleep, this has an impact on increased sick leave, increased risk of accidents labor...

He also highlighted that Spain is the first country in the consumption of anxiolytics and that the consumer organization (OCU) denounces that benzodiazepines are the medications most used to treat insomnia and anxiety, being the only alternative offered to the patient, "before prescribing these medications, the causes of insomnia should be personalized and treat it in different ways,” stated the sleep expert.

Natalia Fernández “We already know the consequences that not sleeping has on health, but it also affects workplace accidents and that is why it is an issue that is addressed from the concept of a healthy company.”

He also highlighted the importance that, from the mutual collaborators with Social Security, is given to disorders caused by lack of sleep and showed all the prevention and well-being tools that we offer from Fraternidad-Muprespa such as, for example, the healthy itinerary 'Walking towards the well-being' or the 'Health Corner'.

"At the mutual insurance company we carry out campaigns on sleep and its connection with work accidents, and everything that sleepiness entails: stress, work environment, medication consumption... we have informative material such as workshops, videos, guides, infographics and very useful downloadables." “Currently, one of the recommendations for good sleep hygiene is digital disconnection at the end of the day.”

To end the day, Iratxe D. Ascasso, Country Manager of PharmaNord Spain, took the floor and explained, from a biological point of view, how sleep affects the body. "According to studies: we sleep less and we sleep worse. The increase in attention deficit is linked to lack of sleep." She also revealed some of the guidelines that can be established to improve it, and how it is necessary that "sleep treatment has to be personalized to be truly effective," the expert concluded.

Without a doubt, a day that served to “wake up” and provide solutions to a problem as common and widespread as lack of sleep today.
