Family farming i includes all family-based agricultural activities that are related to various areas of rural development. Family farming is a way of classifying agricultural, forestry, fishing, pastoral and aquaculture production managed and operated by a family and that depends mainly on the family's workforce, including both women and men.

In both developing and developed countries, family farming is the predominant form of food production.

At the national level there are several key factors for the successful development of family farming such as agroecological conditions and territorial characteristics, the regulatory environment, access to markets, land and natural resources, technology and extension services, financing, demographic, economic and sociocultural conditions, or the availability of specialized education, among others.
